Connect Claude to your website, step by step
By the ContentMetric team · Checked against Anthropic's help pages and the ContentMetric editor on 16 October 2026

The short answer
To connect Claude to your website, your website platform needs to offer a connector address (an MCP server URL). Copy it, then in Claude open Customize, then Connectors, press + Add and Add custom connector, paste the address and sign in to your website to allow access. After that, turn the connector on in a chat and ask Claude for changes in plain words. On ContentMetric, edits arrive as drafts, so nothing goes live until you publish.
What connecting actually does
Normally Claude can only write text for you to copy and paste. A connector gives Claude a safe, limited way to work on your website directly: read your pages, change the words, add a section, write a new page. It uses MCP (Model Context Protocol), an open standard that lets AI apps talk to other software. You stay in control of what it can reach and when it can reach it.
What you need
- A Claude account. Anthropic says custom connectors are on the Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. Free accounts can add one custom connector. On Team and Enterprise, an owner adds it for the organisation first.
- A website platform with a connector. Not every builder has one. On ContentMetric it is part of Pro and above, including the 7-day Pro trial (no card needed).
- Five minutes.
Step 1: Copy your site's connector address
In ContentMetric, open your site, go to Site settings, then AI & code. Under Connect an AI assistant you will see an AI connector URL with tabs for Claude, Cursor, ChatGPT and other apps. Copy the URL. Each site has its own, and the connector can only reach that one site.

Step 2: Add it to Claude
- In Claude, open Customize, then Connectors.
- Press + Add, then Add custom connector.
- Give it a name you will recognise, such as your business name, and paste the connector URL.
- Press Continue, keep the sign-in settings Claude detects, and press Add.
Step 3: Allow access
A ContentMetric window opens. Sign in if asked, then press Allow. On this page you also choose how long the connection lasts: 30 days, 90 days (the default), 1 year, or no expiry. A shorter time is safer; you can always reconnect.
Step 4: Ask for your first change
In a new chat, press + and turn your connector on. Then ask in plain words. Some good first requests:
Read my homepage and tell me what a new customer would find unclear.
Update our opening hours on every page to: Mon to Fri 8am to 6pm, Sat 9am to 1pm.
Write a new page about our catering service, using the same style as the homepage. Keep it as a draft.
Claude's changes are saved as drafts. Open the editor, preview them, and press Publish when you are happy. If something looks wrong, the Versions panel lets you go back.
Using Claude Code instead
If you or your developer use Claude Code, the Claude tab in the same panel shows a single command to add the connector, in the form claude mcp add --transport http <name> <connector URL>. Then run /mcp inside Claude Code and choose Authenticate.
Using ChatGPT instead
ChatGPT works too, in beta. In short: turn on developer mode in ChatGPT's settings, add a custom MCP server with the same connector URL, sign in and allow access, then type @ in a chat to pick your site. The ChatGPT tab in the panel shows each click. Thinking about ChatGPT's own website tool instead? Read ChatGPT Sites for a business website.
How to disconnect
In Site settings, AI & code, the Connected AI apps list shows every app that has signed in to your site. Revoke one and its access stops straight away. You can also remove the connector in Claude under Customize, Connectors. For what else to think about before you hand an AI the keys, read Is it safe to let AI edit your website?
Common questions
Can I connect Claude to my website on the free plan?
On Claude's side, yes: Free accounts can add one custom connector. Your website platform must also offer a connector. On ContentMetric it is part of Pro and above, including the 7-day free trial.
Can Claude publish changes to my website by itself?
On ContentMetric, Claude's edits are saved as drafts. Publishing is a separate step that needs publish permission, so by default you review and press Publish yourself.
Can Claude see my other websites?
No. Each ContentMetric connector address belongs to one site, and Claude can never do more than your own role on that site allows.
What if my website builder has no connector?
Claude can still write and improve your text in a normal chat for you to paste in. For direct editing you need a platform with an MCP connector.
