Claude as a website builder: what it can build and where it stops
By the ContentMetric team · Checked against Anthropic's help pages on 16 October 2026

The short answer
Claude is not a website builder on its own, but it can make a website in four ways: as an artifact you publish with a link, as a design in Claude Design that you export or send to a host, as a full project written by Claude Code, or by editing a real website through a connector. The first three give you a site you then have to host, set up for Google and look after. The fourth lets Claude edit a site that already has hosting, search settings and forms built in.
People search "Claude website builder" hoping for one button. There isn't one, but there are four good routes, and the right one depends on what the website is for.
1. Artifacts: a page inside the Claude app
Ask Claude in a normal chat to "make a one-page website for my florist shop" and it builds the page as an artifact, a live preview next to the chat. You change it by asking. When you like it, you can publish it: Anthropic's help centre says publishing is available on the Free, Pro and Max plans and gives you a public link that anyone can open. On Team and Enterprise plans, sharing stays inside your organisation.
Good for: a quick page to show someone, a menu, an event page, a price calculator.
Where it stops: the link lives on Claude's address, not your own domain. There is no contact form that emails you, no page title or description settings for Google, and no simple way for a second person to edit it.
2. Claude Design: a proper design you export
Claude Design, launched by Anthropic in April 2026, is for visual work: website mock-ups, landing pages, slides. It is available on the Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. You describe the site, comment on the result and refine it, and the design can follow your brand colours and fonts.
What it does not do, according to Anthropic's help pages, is host the site for you. Instead you can download it as a .zip, export it as a standalone HTML file, send it to another service (including Netlify, Vercel, Wix, Lovable, Replit and v0), or hand it to Claude Code. Our guide Put a Claude Design site live covers each route step by step.
3. Claude Code: a full project for someone technical
Claude Code is Anthropic's coding tool. It runs in a terminal, in code editors, on the desktop and on the web, and it can write an entire website project: pages, styles, a contact form handler, even the deployment set-up. It is powerful, and many developers use it daily.
The catch for a small business: you own every part of the result. Someone has to pick a host, connect the domain, keep the code up to date, and fix it when something breaks. If you have a developer, that is fine. If you do not, the site tends to freeze the day it launches.
4. A connector: Claude edits a real website
The fourth route turns it around. Instead of Claude producing files, you connect Claude to a website that already runs on a website builder. Claude can then read your pages and make changes when you ask, for example "add our new opening hours to the contact page" or "write a page about our wedding flowers".
This works through custom connectors, which Anthropic supports in Claude using an open standard called MCP (Model Context Protocol, a common way for AI apps to talk to other software). ContentMetric is one website builder with a connector built in: on Pro and above, each site has its own connector address in Site settings, and Claude's changes are saved as drafts until you publish. The full set-up is in Connect Claude to your website.
The four routes side by side
| Artifact | Claude Design | Claude Code | Connector to a builder | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Who it suits | Anyone | Anyone with a design eye | Developers | Business owners |
| Hosting | A public Claude link | None; export or send elsewhere | You choose and set up | Included with the builder |
| Your own domain | No | Depends on where you send it | Yes, you set it up | Yes, on the builder's paid plan |
| Google settings | None | Add them wherever you host | Coded by hand | Built into the builder |
| Contact form | No | Depends on the host | You build it | Built into the builder |
| Who keeps it updated | You, in a chat | You, then re-export | Your developer | You, by chat or by hand |
Which route should you pick?
- Showing an idea to a partner or customer: an artifact. It takes minutes.
- You care about the look and want a designer-quality layout: Claude Design, then send it to a host or import it into a builder.
- You have a developer and need something custom: Claude Code.
- It is your main business website: a website builder with a connector, so Claude does the writing and editing while the builder handles hosting, Google settings, forms and backups.

A prompt to start with
Whichever route you choose, Claude does better work when you give it the facts. Copy this, fill in the brackets, and paste it into Claude:

Sections: what we do, why choose us, reviews, frequently asked questions, contact.
Do not invent reviews, prices or awards. Leave a clear placeholder where you need a fact from me.
Common questions
Can Claude build a website for free?
Yes, in part. On the Free plan you can build a page as an artifact and publish it with a public link, and Claude Design is also on the Free plan. You still need somewhere to host it under your own domain if you want a proper business website.
Can Claude host my website?
Not under your own domain. A published artifact gets a public Claude link. For a real address like yourbusiness.com you need a host or a website builder.
Is Claude better than ChatGPT for building a website?
Both can write good pages. The bigger difference is the route: ChatGPT now has Sites, which hosts the result, while Claude leans on Claude Design, Claude Code and connectors to other tools. Pick the route that fits who will look after the site.
Can Claude edit my existing website?
Yes, if your website platform offers a connector Claude can use. Claude then reads and edits your pages when you ask. ContentMetric includes one on Pro and above, and saves Claude's changes as drafts until you publish.
