Can ChatGPT build a website? Yes, in three ways
By the ContentMetric team · Checked against OpenAI's help pages on 16 October 2026

The short answer
Yes. ChatGPT can build a website in three ways: ChatGPT Sites builds and hosts a site for you on paid plans; canvas writes the code for a page and shows you a preview, which you then host yourself; and a connector lets ChatGPT edit a real website that runs on a website builder. For a business website, the important part is not the first draft but what comes after: your own domain, Google settings, a contact form that reaches you, and easy updates.
Way 1: ChatGPT Sites (builds and hosts)
Since July 2026, ChatGPT can build a website and put it online for you. You ask for a website in a chat, ChatGPT shows a preview, you ask for changes, then you publish. It needs a paid ChatGPT plan, and each plan has limits on how many sites, how much storage and how much traffic you get.
It is the fastest route from idea to live page. Before you use it for your main business site, read ChatGPT Sites: what it can and can't do for a business website. The short version: check your plan's limits, how Google will see the site, and where enquiries go.
Way 2: canvas (writes the code, you host it)
Ask ChatGPT for "the HTML for a one-page website" and it can open canvas, a side panel where it writes the code. OpenAI's help page says canvas renders HTML and React code in a sandbox so you can see the result. You can keep asking for changes there.
Canvas does not put the page online. You copy the code into a file and upload it to a host or a website builder that accepts HTML. Every later change means asking ChatGPT again and uploading again, so this suits a one-off page better than a site you will update every month.
Way 3: a connector (ChatGPT edits a real site)
ChatGPT can also connect to other software through custom connectors, which use an open standard called MCP (Model Context Protocol). If your website builder offers one, ChatGPT can read and change your actual pages: "add our Saturday hours", "write a page for our new service".
ContentMetric sites have a ChatGPT connector in beta on Pro and above. You turn on developer mode in ChatGPT, add the site's connector address, and approve the connection. Changes arrive as drafts, so nothing goes live until you publish. The same works with Claude; see Connect Claude to your website.
How to build a website with ChatGPT, step by step
These steps work for any of the three ways.
Step 1: Write down the facts first
ChatGPT will happily invent opening hours, prices and reviews if you do not give it the real ones. Before you start, write down your business name, what you sell, your area, who your customers are, your contact details and two or three honest reasons people choose you.
Step 2: Ask for one page, not a whole site
Start with the homepage. Paste this prompt and fill in the brackets:
Build a homepage for my business.
Business: [name], a [type of business] in [town or area].
Customers: [who they are and what they usually want].
What makes us different: [two or three real reasons].
Contact: [phone, email, address or service area, opening hours].
Sections: what we do, why choose us, reviews, frequently asked questions, contact.
Do not invent reviews, prices or awards. Leave a placeholder where you need a fact from me.
Step 3: Fix the words before the looks
Read the page as a customer would. Does the first line say what you do and where? Is the phone number right? Ask for changes in plain words: "make the first line shorter", "add a section about delivery". Colours and fonts come last.
Step 4: Set it up for Google
Every page needs a title and a short description for search results, and your business name, address and phone number should match your Google Business Profile exactly. If you use Sites or canvas, ask ChatGPT to add these to the code and check they are there. A website builder gives you a box for each. Our lesson How to get your business on Google explains the rest.
Step 5: Test the contact route
Send yourself a message through the site, from your phone, before you tell anyone about it. If it does not arrive, nothing else matters.
Step 6: Put it on your own domain
A business website should live at your own address, like yourbusiness.com. ChatGPT Sites supports domains you already own, where available on your plan. A website builder usually connects one with a couple of DNS records (settings at the company you bought the domain from).
Which way is right for you?
| ChatGPT Sites | Canvas | Connector to a builder | |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT plan | Paid | Check canvas on your plan | Check developer mode on your plan |
| Hosting | Included, within limits | You find a host | Included with the builder |
| Google settings | Ask ChatGPT to code them | Ask ChatGPT to code them | Built into the builder |
| Contact form | Design your own storage | You need a form service | Built into the builder |
| Best for | Quick sites and tools | A one-off page | Your main business website |

Common questions
Can ChatGPT build a website for free?
Partly. Canvas can write the code for a page and preview it, but you then need to host it yourself. ChatGPT Sites, which hosts the site for you, needs a paid ChatGPT plan.
Can ChatGPT publish my website?
Yes, with ChatGPT Sites on a paid plan. It publishes to a web address and can use a domain you already own where that is available. Canvas does not publish; you copy the code to a host.
Will a website made by ChatGPT rank on Google?
It can, if the page has a clear title and description, real content about your business, matching contact details, and is submitted to Google Search Console. Who built the code matters much less than whether those basics are in place.
Can ChatGPT update my existing website?
Yes, if your website platform has a connector ChatGPT can use. ContentMetric has one in beta on Pro and above, and ChatGPT's changes are saved as drafts until you publish.
Use ChatGPT for the words. Let the website builder do the rest.
ContentMetric builds your site from one sentence about your business, with hosting, Google settings and a working contact form included. Connect ChatGPT (beta) or Claude on Pro to keep it up to date by chat.
