Put a password on your whole site

Ask every visitor for one shared password before they can see any page, for a site before launch or a private preview for a client.

Updated 23 Oct 2026

Password protection hides your whole site behind one password that you choose. Anyone who opens any page sees a small page asking for it. With the right password they see the site as usual and stay signed in on that device for 30 days.

It is for a site that is not ready for the public yet, or a preview you want to show a client or a colleague. It is on Pro and Business. Owners and Admins of the workspace can turn it on and off.

Turn it on

  1. Open Settings for the site and stay on General.
  2. Scroll to Password protection and turn the switch on.
  3. Type a password of at least 8 characters and press Turn on.
  4. Share the password with the people who should see the site. It reaches every address of your site, your own domain and the free contentmetric.com address, within a few minutes.

Change the password

  1. In Password protection, press Change password.
  2. Type the new one and press Save.

Everyone who had signed in with the old password is signed out and has to enter the new one.

Turn it off

Turn the switch off. The site is open to everyone again within a few minutes. You can turn it on again later with a new password.

What visitors see

A plain page with your site's address, the words "This website is private" and a password box. There is no way to see or reset the password from that page. If someone types a wrong password, the page says so and lets them try again.

Good to know

  • While the password is on, search engines cannot see or list your site, and nothing from it is kept in the fast copy we serve from near your visitors. That is on purpose: a private site stays private.
  • Forms, the shop and member pages keep working for visitors who have entered the password.
  • An AI assistant connected to your site with the AI connector keeps working. The connector has its own sign-in and does not use the site password.
  • If you also take the site offline with Unpublish, visitors see the password page first and the offline page after they sign in.
  • If you move the site to the Free plan, the password stays on until you turn it off. You need Pro or Business to turn it on again or to change it.
  • A copy of the site starts without a password.

Common questions

Can I give different people different passwords? No. There is one password for the whole site. For member-only pages with individual sign-ins, see the Members app.

I forgot the password. Press Change password and set a new one. The old one cannot be shown.

Does it protect my images? Yes. Every page and every file of the site asks for the password.
